Paula Johnson-Jefferson Unveils New Indigenous Hair Care Line

Empowering Change: The Inspiring Journey of Paula Johnson-Jefferson

Indigenous Entrepreneur Paula Johnson-Jefferson Set to Launch Hair-Care Line, Celebrating Culture and Resilience

(ANNews) – Eight and a half years ago, Paula Johnson-Jefferson took a bold step away from environments where she felt invisible and undervalued. Armed only with courage, creativity, and a vision, she embarked on a transformative journey that has led her to become a CEO, designer, and visionary. Next month, she will unveil her own line of hair-care products, a significant milestone in her burgeoning business.

“I changed my own life with my business journey,” Paula reflects. “I’m my own boss – I built this. And I’m shining my own light.”

Paula’s designs transcend mere fashion; they embody resilience, culture, and empowerment. At a recent event, a woman who once doubted her purchased one of Paula’s creations, a moment she describes as “full-circle” and a testament to the power of persistence and self-belief.

Drawing inspiration from Indigenous-led organizations like Cree Iskwew Design and the Indigenous Arts Collective of Canada, Paula’s products celebrate traditional knowledge and medicines such as sweetgrass, sage, and cedar. Each item reflects cultural pride and authenticity, showcasing her commitment to uplifting her community through creativity.

In addition to her fashion and beauty ventures, Paula empowers youth through initiatives like Hope Kits, which nurture identity, creativity, and self-belief.

Recently, she showcased her work as a vendor at the Powwow Times International Gathering at the Red Deer Casino on October 25. The event was a vibrant celebration of art, culture, and heritage, featuring Native American dancers in traditional regalia, intricate beadwork, and colorful feathered headdresses. Top dancers from around the globe competed in 11 intense battles, including two World Championship titles, while performances by 2 Drums and the Cree Confederation turned the gathering into a powerful celebration of community spirit.

Indigenous women are increasingly shaping Canada’s entrepreneurial landscape, now owning over 23% of Indigenous businesses—surpassing the proportion of non-Indigenous women entrepreneurs. These ventures reflect cultural identity, values, and innovation, despite systemic barriers like limited access to financing and mentorship. Programs such as the Indigenous Women Entrepreneurship Fund provide crucial support, helping Indigenous women-owned businesses thrive. Paula Johnson-Jefferson exemplifies this resilience, merging entrepreneurial drive with cultural empowerment to create a meaningful impact for herself and her community.

However, Indigenous communities also face internal challenges, including lateral violence—harmful behaviors directed at members of the same group. Rooted in colonization and systemic oppression, lateral violence can erode trust, foster division, and disrupt cultural continuity. Addressing this issue requires community-driven approaches that promote understanding and healing. Initiatives like Lateral Kindness aim to transform harmful behaviors into supportive actions, fostering unity and resilience.

Paula’s vision continues to expand with her upcoming hair-care line, which not only marks a business milestone but also reflects her commitment to wellness, cultural pride, and self-expression. She aims to inspire youth and fellow Indigenous entrepreneurs, demonstrating that success is achievable while remaining true to one’s roots.

“I’m going to grow – and then I’m taking a long vacation. Maybe the Bahamas or Bali,” she laughs.

Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-empowerment: she didn’t wait for permission or acceptance, nor did she allow systemic barriers or past doubts to define her future.

Paula Johnson-Jefferson stands as a beacon of creativity, resilience, and Cree woman empowerment. Her story illustrates how Indigenous women-led businesses can honor tradition, uplift communities, and redefine success on their own terms, all while confronting societal challenges and inspiring future generations to do the same.
