Local Barista Faces Business Challenges Amid Railway Disruptions

Ipswich, Suffolk — Antony Knights, the owner of Suffolk Coffee Pod, is sounding the alarm over the impact of ongoing railway maintenance work on his mobile coffee business. With essential track replacements and bridge repairs set to close lines between Westerfield and Halesworth for nine consecutive days starting Saturday, Knights fears a significant drop in trade.

“The communication from Network Rail has been really bad,” Knights stated, expressing frustration that many local businesses, including his own, were left in the dark about the disruptions. “I only found out about the closures from another source, and I think a lot of trade is going to be lost as some people cannot physically access Tide Mill.”

The closures come at a particularly inconvenient time, coinciding with the half-term holiday, a peak period for local businesses. Despite the challenges, Knights has managed to secure a temporary pitch elsewhere, but he remains concerned about the long-term effects on his business and the local economy.

Kate Snowden from Network Rail acknowledged the communication issues, stating, “We need to improve our communication in future projects.” She emphasized that the ongoing work aims to make the railway “much more reliable,” but admitted that the timing and notification processes could have been handled better.

Mary-Jane King, vice chair of Suffolk Parish Council, echoed these sentiments in an open letter to Network Rail. She highlighted the need for better communication regarding the impacts of the closures on local communities. “We hope that with any future works, we will be able to find some mitigation factors,” she said, acknowledging the necessity of the repairs.

As the railway work continues, Knights and other local business owners are left grappling with the uncertainty of their trade. With further disruptions expected until December, the local community is rallying for improved communication and support from Network Rail to minimize the impact on their livelihoods.
