In a dramatic turn of events, political writer Ryan Lizza has unleashed a series of explosive claims against his ex-fiancée, high-profile journalist Olivia Nuzzi, centering on her alleged digital relationship with 2024 presidential candidate and current Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The revelations, shared in Lizza’s latest post on his Telos News Substack, paint a troubling picture of Nuzzi’s conduct during Kennedy’s presidential campaign.
Lizza alleges that Nuzzi acted as a “private political operative” for Kennedy, regularly sharing “opposition research” obtained from trusted sources. He recounts a specific incident where a young campaign aide provided Nuzzi with inside information about Kennedy’s chaotic selection process for his running mate, Nicole Shanahan. Instead of pursuing the story, Lizza claims Nuzzi persuaded the aide to remain loyal to Kennedy and subsequently informed him of the whistleblower’s identity, effectively “killing” a potentially damaging tell-all.
Lizza argues that such actions are a severe breach of journalistic ethics. “In the media business, there are few journalistic crimes as serious as betraying a confidential source,” he writes. “How could any source—or reader—trust such a reporter again?”
The allegations don’t stop there. Lizza also recalls a moment when Nuzzi reported on President Biden forgetting the name of a Democratic megadonor, a detail she had been told off the record. When questioned about her decision to include it, Nuzzi reportedly said, “I just sort of Michael Wolffed it,” referencing the controversial journalist known for his provocative reporting style.
Further complicating matters, Lizza shares an anecdote involving Nuzzi’s coverage of former President Trump. He describes an encounter between Trump and artist Isabelle Brourman, who had sketched Trump during his hush-money trial. Nuzzi claimed Brourman believed Trump had made an explosive remark about Butler, Pennsylvania, the site of a July 2024 assassination attempt on him.
These claims come on the heels of Lizza’s previous accusations against Nuzzi, including an alleged affair with former U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford during his 2020 presidential campaign. Lizza revealed he discovered an “unfinished love letter” to Sanford, which he claims confirmed their physical relationship and hinted at a falling out.
“My heart stopped when I realized who he was,” Lizza wrote, expressing his devastation over Nuzzi’s betrayal. He described how her infatuation with Sanford led her to send risqué texts and follow him on the campaign trail, ultimately culminating in a rendezvous at his South Carolina home.
As Lizza continues to air these allegations, Nuzzi’s legal counsel, Ari Wilkenfeld, has responded, stating that Lizza’s claims are part of an ongoing harassment campaign against her. “Ms. Nuzzi will not dignify efforts to impugn her character with any future response,” Wilkenfeld asserted.
Nuzzi, who recently left her position at New York magazine following an internal investigation into her relationship with Kennedy, currently serves as the West Coast editor at Vanity Fair. The White House, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and representatives from Condé Nast have yet to comment on the unfolding drama.
As the story develops, the implications for both Nuzzi and Kennedy’s campaigns remain uncertain, leaving the political landscape rife with intrigue and speculation.
