Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on India Amidst Pressure Over Russian Oil Supplies
Welcome to the US politics live blog, where we will cover the latest developments, including the significant escalation in trade tensions between the US and India.
Trump’s 50% Tariffs on India Take Effect Amid Tensions Over Russian Oil
In a significant escalation of trade tensions, President Donald Trump’s decision to double tariffs on goods imported from India to as high as 50% took effect on Wednesday. This move intensifies the already strained relationship between the two nations, which are among the world’s largest democracies and strategic partners.
The new tariffs, which include a punitive 25% levy on Indian goods linked to the country’s purchases of Russian oil, add to an existing 25% tariff on various products. This brings the total duties on items such as garments, gems, jewelry, footwear, sporting goods, furniture, and chemicals to unprecedented levels, rivaling tariffs imposed on Brazil and China.
Despite five rounds of discussions since April aimed at reaching a trade agreement, negotiations broke down over disagreements regarding the opening of India’s extensive farm and dairy sectors and its continued oil purchases from Russia. The new tariffs threaten thousands of small exporters and jobs, particularly in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.
An anonymous official from India’s commerce ministry indicated that exporters affected by the tariffs would receive financial assistance and be encouraged to diversify their markets, potentially looking towards China, Latin America, and the Middle East.
In other political developments, President Trump held a three-hour televised cabinet meeting where his secretaries praised him, and he hinted at a potential replacement for Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, who is currently facing pressure to resign. Meanwhile, a whistleblower complaint has surfaced alleging that Elon Musk’s “department of government efficiency” mishandled sensitive Social Security data, raising concerns about federal privacy laws.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the implications of these tariffs and the ongoing diplomatic tensions with Russia remain a focal point for both the U.S. and India.
