Political Ad Blitz in Pennsylvania: A Look at the Unavoidable Campaign Landscape
Political Ads Flood Pennsylvania as Key Swing State in 2024 Presidential Race
As the 2024 presidential race heats up, Pennsylvania finds itself at the center of a political advertising blitz. With its 19 electoral votes and tight voter registration margins, the Keystone State is considered a must-win for both major parties.
According to data tracked by AdImpact and analyzed by the Wall Street Journal, Pennsylvania has been the target of the largest political spending in recent weeks. Since July 22, a staggering $42 million has been spent on political ads focusing on the presidential race, making it the highest level of spending in the country.
The flood of ads this early in the campaign season is unprecedented, according to experts. Dan Mallinson, an associate professor of politics and public administration at Penn State University-Harrisburg, noted that the volume of political ads in Pennsylvania is unique for this stage of the race.
Both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are making campaign stops in Pennsylvania, underscoring the state’s importance in the race. Harris recently unveiled the Democrats’ new ticket in Philadelphia, while Trump is scheduled to appear at a rally in eastern Pennsylvania.
The campaigns are not holding back when it comes to spending on advertising. Harris’ campaign is expected to launch a $90 million ad blitz targeting swing states, including Pennsylvania, while the Trump-backed super PAC MAGA Inc. announced plans for a $100 million ad campaign in the coming month.
Experts predict that the 2024 presidential campaign will be the most expensive in history, with an estimated $10.7 billion spent overall. The saturation of political ads in Pennsylvania reflects the intense competition for the state’s crucial electoral votes.
As Election Day approaches, the impact of the advertising dollars remains to be seen. Shippensburg University political science professor Alison Dagnes noted that the influx of campaign finances following recent developments in the race has created a powerful environment for increased political spending.
With the traditional start of the final leg of the campaign approaching over the Labor Day holiday, experts anticipate that Pennsylvania will continue to see a proliferation of political ads. The state is poised to remain a battleground in the race to the White House, with both parties vying for victory in this crucial swing state.
