The End of an Era: Adler’s Jewelry Closes After 127 Years on Canal Street

Adler’s Jewelry: A New Orleans Icon Closes Its Doors After 127 Years

New Orleans, LA — The vibrant echoes of a bygone era are fading as Adler’s Jewelry, a cherished fixture on Canal Street, prepares to close its doors after 127 years of operation. Once hailed as the “Tiffany’s of the South,” the family-owned jewelry and gift shop has been a cornerstone of New Orleans’ retail landscape, where generations of brides registered for fine china and krewe captains commissioned ornate pins.

Coleman E. Adler II, the fourth-generation owner, announced the closure, attributing the decision to his impending retirement at the age of 83. “I have been doing this a long time,” Adler said, reflecting on his tenure that began in 1973 after the untimely deaths of his father and uncle. “It is time.”

Adler’s flagship location at 722 Canal Street has served as a high-end anchor amid the changing fortunes of the iconic avenue, which has seen a decline in traditional retail as hotels and quick-service restaurants have taken over. The store will begin a “retirement sale” to liquidate its inventory, although no firm closure date has been set.

The decision to close marks a significant loss for Canal Street, which has already seen a wave of family-owned businesses shutter in recent years. Notable closures include Canal Barge Co., Elmer Chocolate, and Langenstein’s, all of which have ended over a century of local ownership.

Adler’s legacy dates back to 1898 when Coleman E. Adler I, an immigrant from Slovakia, opened a fine jewelry store on Royal Street. The store quickly gained popularity, moving to Canal Street in 1902 and establishing itself as a premier jeweler in the region. Over the decades, Adler’s has been commissioned for significant state projects, including the design of the Louisiana Centennial coin and the perpetual silver trophy for the Tulane-Centenary football game.

Despite its storied history, Adler’s has faced challenges in recent years, including rising costs and changing consumer habits. The jewelry industry has seen a significant decline, with 167 stores closing in the first quarter of this year alone, a 20% increase from the previous year. Nationally recognized brands have also begun to exert more control over local retailers, further complicating the landscape for independent jewelers.

Adler acknowledges these pressures but insists they did not influence his decision to retire. Instead, he looks forward to dedicating more time to civic and charitable endeavors, a commitment his family has upheld for generations. “I will be able to continue to do something other than this for the good of the community,” he said, expressing hopes that his children will also find ways to serve.

As the community prepares to bid farewell to Adler’s, the building itself will not be sold or leased to a T-shirt shop, Adler confirmed. Instead, family members will maintain offices there, pursuing their own ventures while honoring the legacy of the store.

Mikal Adler, one of Coleman’s children, reflected on the closure as a milestone rather than an endpoint. “What started with one, is now many. Many businesses, many Colemans, many Adlers, many stories. And many more to come,” he said.

As the final chapter of Adler’s Jewelry unfolds, the community is left to cherish the memories of a beloved institution that has been a part of New Orleans’ fabric for over a century.
