Tensions Rise in Maine’s Democratic Primary: Platner vs. Mills

By Sahil Kapur and Scott Wong

In a race that could reshape the Senate landscape for 2026, the Democratic primary in Maine is heating up as two formidable candidates—two-term Governor Janet Mills and political newcomer Graham Platner—gear up for a contentious showdown. Recent developments have sent shockwaves through the party, as Platner, a first-time candidate, has surged ahead in the polls despite facing scrutiny over his past.

A recent University of New Hampshire poll reveals a surprising lead for Platner, showing him ahead of Mills by a staggering 34 points—58% to 24% among likely primary voters, with 14% still undecided. This poll was conducted during a tumultuous period for Platner, who has been under fire for inflammatory online posts and a controversial tattoo that he later claimed to have covered up after it was likened to a Nazi symbol.

Despite these controversies, the dynamics within the Senate remain largely unchanged. While Mills enjoys the backing of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who believes she is the best candidate to unseat five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins, Platner has garnered support from influential figures like Senator Bernie Sanders. Sanders praised Platner’s military service, highlighting his four tours in combat and his journey through PTSD.

“This is a guy who served four terms in combat,” Sanders stated. “He came out of that war, as he has acknowledged, with PTSD, got good treatment at the VA, got his life together.”

The primary reflects deeper divides within the Democratic Party, pitting establishment figures against a new generation of leaders. Issues of age, experience, and electability are at the forefront as Democrats strategize for a must-win race to regain control of the Senate.

Pentagon’s Communication Crackdown Faces Pushback

Analysis by Jonathan Allen

In a move that has raised eyebrows on Capitol Hill, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has implemented a communication crackdown that restricts Department of Defense employees from speaking to Congress without prior authorization. This policy has ignited bipartisan backlash, with lawmakers expressing frustration over being told who they can communicate with regarding military matters.

Historically, the Pentagon has faced criticism for its overly optimistic narratives, often leading to public disillusionment. Hegseth’s recent actions, which include barring credible media from the Pentagon, have drawn ire from both sides of the aisle. Lawmakers, including Rep. Tom Cole, a Republican and chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, have voiced strong opposition to the policy.

“It’s ill-advised, and it’s not going to work,” Cole remarked, emphasizing the importance of open communication between military personnel and their representatives.

As Congress holds the purse strings to the Pentagon’s budget, lawmakers are poised to challenge Hegseth’s policies, ensuring that transparency remains a priority in military communications.
