PM Modi Advocates for ‘Swadeshi’ Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
PM Modi Champions ‘Swadeshi’ Amid Global Economic Turbulence
Varanasi, India — In a fervent call to action, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to embrace the spirit of “Swadeshi” — promoting locally-made products — during a public meeting in his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi on Saturday. His appeal comes at a time when the global economy is grappling with instability and uncertainty, particularly following the recent announcement of tariffs on Indian exports to the United States.
Modi emphasized that as nations prioritize their own economic interests, India must remain vigilant and focused on its own growth trajectory. “The world economy is facing instability and uncertainty. In such times, countries are focusing solely on their own interests. India, too, is on the path to becoming the world’s third-largest economy and must remain alert to its own economic priorities,” he stated.
The Prime Minister’s renewed push for ‘Swadeshi’ is particularly significant given the U.S. government’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on exports from India, affecting approximately 70 countries. This move has raised concerns among Indian exporters and businesses, prompting Modi to call for a national movement to support local products.
Highlighting the importance of farmers, small industries, and youth employment, Modi asserted, “The government is doing everything possible in this direction. But as citizens, we too have responsibilities.” He urged every Indian to contribute to this cause, stating, “If we want India to become the third-largest economy, every political party and every leader must work in the nation’s interest and awaken the spirit of Swadeshi among the people.”
In a bid to encourage conscious consumerism, Modi asked citizens to reflect on their purchases: “Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves — has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us. We must adopt the mantra of ‘Vocal for Local.'”
The Prime Minister made a special appeal to traders and shopkeepers, urging them to pledge to sell only Swadeshi goods. “Promoting made in India goods will be the truest service to the country,” he said, as the festival and wedding seasons approach, encouraging people to ensure that all new purchases are made in India.
As the global economic landscape continues to shift, Modi’s call for a collective effort to support indigenous products resonates with many, positioning ‘Swadeshi’ as not just a slogan, but a vital strategy for national resilience and growth.
