Community Mourns Loss of George Barnett Nelson Sr. at Pa & Ma’s Backyard BBQ
The Indianapolis community came together on Thursday to support the family of George Barnett Nelson Sr., who was tragically gunned down outside his barbecue restaurant the night before. Nelson, a beloved figure in the neighborhood, passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Known for his restaurant, Pa & Ma’s Backyard BBQ, Nelson was described by his cousin, Chef Tawana Gulley, as someone who put his heart and soul into the community. The restaurant, now a symbol of his legacy, was filled with customers and friends who came to honor his memory.
Nelson’s daughter, Brockelle Nelson, shared that her father knew the gunman who took his life. The disagreement that led to the shooting was over a few hundred dollars related to a siding job the man was hired to do for the restaurant.
Despite the tragedy, Brockelle is determined to keep her father’s business running and plans to move to Indianapolis to take over the operations. She sees it as a way to honor her dad’s memory and continue his legacy of generosity and community support.
The arrest of a suspect and the detention of three others brought some closure to the community, but the loss of Nelson has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him. Reverend Charles Harrison and longtime friend Janice White both spoke highly of Nelson, highlighting his kindness and dedication to helping others.
As the community mourns the loss of a beloved figure, they also come together to celebrate the life and legacy of George Barnett Nelson Sr., a man who touched the lives of many through his restaurant and his generous spirit.
