NewsNation: Rising from Controversy to Cable News Competitor
NewsNation Gains Traction Amid Controversy and Evolving Landscape
In a significant turn of events, Nexstar Media, the Dallas-based owner of NewsNation, is beginning to realize the potential of its five-year-old cable news network. This comes on the heels of NewsNation’s impressive viewership during the memorial service for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, where it outperformed both CNN and MSNBC, reaching millions of viewers and solidifying its place in the competitive cable news arena.
Launched in September 2020, NewsNation initially struggled to find its footing, facing programming shakeups and low ratings. However, it has since transformed into a 24/7 news network, carving out a niche behind the dominant players—Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN. Despite still being considered an underdog, NewsNation is gaining momentum, even earning a parody on “Saturday Night Live,” a sign that it is starting to make waves.
Cherie Grzech, who took the helm of NewsNation’s day-to-day operations in July 2021, expressed optimism about the network’s growing recognition. “When people notice us, we’re doing well,” she stated, highlighting the importance of being part of the late-night conversation.
Nexstar’s recent decision to preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” over comments made by the host regarding Kirk’s assassination has thrust the network into the spotlight. This move, which sparked a free speech debate, has drawn both criticism and support, with ABC ultimately reinstating Kimmel after facing backlash.
NewsNation’s evolution has been marked by strategic hires, including former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, who joined the network in October 2022. The network has also invested in new studios in New York and Washington, D.C., enhancing its production capabilities and expanding its reach.
Despite its growth, NewsNation still lags behind its competitors in viewership. In August, it ranked 55th among cable networks, averaging 99,000 viewers in prime time, compared to Fox News’ 2.3 million. However, its recent coverage of Kirk’s memorial service, which peaked at nearly 2 million viewers, indicates a potential turning point.
Critics question whether NewsNation can maintain its mission of delivering unbiased news, especially in light of its parent company’s controversial decisions. Yet, the network has been recognized as one of the most unbiased major cable news outlets, according to Ad Fontes Media.
As NewsNation continues to navigate the complexities of the media landscape, its commitment to local journalism and community engagement remains a cornerstone of its strategy. With a growing audience and a focus on unbiased reporting, the network is poised for further evolution in the coming years.
As Grzech aptly put it, “We’re learning as we go,” and for viewers, that journey is one to watch.
