Farewell to Cobbler’s Corner: A 49-Year Legacy in Shoe Repair Closes Its Doors

Farewell to Cobbler’s Corner: A Local Legacy Closes After 49 Years

COLUMBIANA, OH — After nearly five decades of service, Cobbler’s Corner, the beloved shoe repair shop and footwear retailer, is set to close its doors for the final time this Saturday. Owner Terry Thompson, along with his daughter Jennifer, made the difficult decision to shut down the business that has been a staple in the community since 1975.

Cobbler’s Corner has been a beacon for residents seeking quality shoe repair and a wide selection of footwear. However, the shop will not be celebrating its golden anniversary next year, as economic challenges and changing consumer habits have taken their toll.

Thompson, who founded the shop after a severe back injury redirected his career, expressed gratitude for the community’s support over the years. “We’ve weathered many storms together,” he said. “But the economic decline following the closures of major employers like Youngstown Sheet & Tube and General Motors Lordstown, coupled with the rise of online shopping, has made it increasingly difficult to sustain the business.”

Over the years, Cobbler’s Corner has moved four times to accommodate its growing inventory, eventually settling into an expansive 8,000-square-foot location at Village Plaza. At its peak, the shop boasted a staggering 10,000 pairs of shoes and specialized equipment for repairs.

In addition to shoe repair, Thompson innovated with products like the E-Z Caster and the E-Z Gait Drop-Foot Brace, showcasing his commitment to helping customers beyond traditional services. After Thompson retired to Florida in 2017, Jennifer took the reins, continuing the family legacy.

Despite the shop’s rich history, the pandemic has shifted consumer behavior significantly. “COVID has changed how people interact today,” Thompson noted. “We’ve made the decision to close the store with honor, reflecting on the many memories we’ve created here.”

As Cobbler’s Corner prepares for its last day of operation, an attorney will oversee the liquidation of remaining inventory. Thompson plans to return to Port Lucia, Florida, where he has served as a minister since 2018.

The final day of business will be Saturday, with hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. As the community bids farewell to this cherished establishment, many will remember Cobbler’s Corner not just as a store, but as a cornerstone of Columbiana’s history.
