Fort Smith, AR – Exciting developments are underway in the Fort Smith metro area, showcasing the region’s commitment to education, community health, and military readiness.
UAFS Launches “Research Den”
The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (UAFS) is set to unveil its innovative “Research Den” series, designed to foster casual and engaging discussions about groundbreaking research conducted by its faculty and students. Kicking off on August 26 at 6 p.m. at the Center for Economic Development’s Bakery District classroom, the inaugural event will feature four student researchers presenting their work in a jargon-free format, followed by a Q&A session.
Taylor Martinez, director of research and sponsored programs, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “UAFS has some truly innovative research and ideas on campus… These aren’t just academic exercises. Our faculty and students are working on questions that matter to Fort Smith, to Arkansas, and beyond.”
Among the presenters, senior biological science major Willow McFerran will lead a Bioblitz project aimed at engaging citizens in biodiversity logging. Other topics include the secret lives of amphibians and the impact of human activity on aquatic ecosystems.
Public Hearing on Military Expansion
In another significant development, the Department of the Air Force is seeking community input on a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) regarding the expansion of the foreign military pilot training center at Ebbing Air National Guard Base. The expansion will increase the number of F-35 fighter jets from 24 to 36, necessitating new infrastructure and personnel.
A public hearing will be held via Zoom on September 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with an in-person session scheduled for September 9 at the Fort Smith Convention Center. Community members are encouraged to participate and share their thoughts on the proposed changes.
ACHE and ARCOM Linkage Agreement
The Arkansas Colleges of Health Education (ACHE) and the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM) have formalized a linkage agreement aimed at enhancing educational pathways for aspiring medical professionals. This agreement guarantees acceptance and interview opportunities for ACHE students who meet specific academic criteria.
Kyle Parker, ACHE president and CEO, stated, “This agreement reflects our continued commitment to student success and to strengthening the pathway to medical education in Arkansas and beyond.”
Degen Foundation Grants Support Local Health Initiatives
In a move to bolster community health resources, the Degen Foundation awarded over $442,000 in grants to various local organizations, including the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education and the Community Dental Clinic. Notably, ACHE received nearly $390,000 to enhance its simulation lab with high-fidelity manikins, significantly improving medical training and patient safety.
Degen Foundation representatives highlighted the importance of these grants in promoting health and dignity within the community, particularly through initiatives like the Community Hygiene Closets established by the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Diamond Hills.
These developments reflect Fort Smith’s vibrant community spirit and commitment to education, health, and military readiness, promising a bright future for its residents.
